Steam reforming with FLUENT?

Hello everybody, has anybody some experience in modelling methane steam reforming with FLUENT? Moreover, I would like to include 3 global reactions (article from Xu 1989) with its kinetical equations. Any suggestions? Thanx for replying! Claud

Dear Claud,

I'm intersted in steam reforming as well. so far all my work was with process simulators ,e.g Hysys, and i would like to expand to cfd as well. most of my cfd work is not reaction based and will aprecaite it if you could share your finidngs on steam reforming with me.

thanks for your time,

regards

Re: Steam reforming with FLUENT?

Just write a UDF that modifies the reaction rates (either volume or surface) and hook the UDF to the fluent solver.

It works...

Good luck

Re: Steam reforming with FLUENT?

Hi Mathis, do you have an exact example for that UDF? Do you also work on steam reforming? I am highly interested since I want to model a part of an autothermal gasifyier. If you have a good example (since I have no experience in writing own UDFs) could you please contact me again so that we could exchange some information. Thanks a lot for your help! Claud

Hi Claud,

I can recommend you to look in the Fluent UDF Guide under the model dependant define macro "DEFINE_VR_RATE", there you can find some examples you can build your work on.

Fluent does support power law kinectics. Is there any need to write an udf?

Re: Steam reforming with FLUENT?

Hi RoM,

from my point of view it is necessary to write an own UDF since the kinetical equations are not that simple and I can only include simple kinetics in FLUENT (I have reaction rate equations including different partial pressures and the k-values, see "Methane Steam Reforming, Methanation and Water-Gas Shift: I. Intrinsic Kinetics" by Xu1989). So at the moment I am trying to figure out how UDF works in general. If you have any suggestions regarding that topic I would appreciate your answer.

Thanx.

Claud

Hi Claud,

Claud what is your deadline - if I get time I can try to make a small PDF guide... of some of my work?

Re: Steam reforming with FLUENT?

Hi Mathis,

thanks for your offer. It sounds like you are also working on this kind of topic or what is your research field? And regarding the deadline: as always "the sooner the better". For steam reforming processes I have done some modelling with Cantera/MATLAB in a plug flow reactor. Therefore, I think it would be interesting to implement the kinetics into FLUENT as a next step. At the institute we try to model an ATR gasifyier with FLUENT and up to now only the gas phase is working quite well but the heterogeneous reactions are not included up to now.

Thanx again. Claud

Re: Steam reforming with FLUENT?

Unfortunalty i dont have the paper you mentioned. If you can send me a link or pdf copy i will take a look at it.

Depending on your model you need different macros for an udf. If you reaction mechanism is straight forward like natural gas combustion you can use "finite rate/eddy dissipation" as a reation model and a DEFINE_VR_RATE macro to define the reaction rates.

Since steam reforming reactions include CO-H2O shift you will probably want to account for the CO-H2O equlibirium. In this this case "finite rate/eddy dissipation" will produce poor results and its better to use EDC instead. EDC wont work with DEFINE_VR_VRATE, you will need DEFINE_NET_REACTION_RATE in this case.

Re: Steam reforming with FLUENT?

Hi Claud,

I have been modelling ethanol/methane steam reforming by use of Fluent - trying to improve a reactor for hydrogen production, so i'm pretty sure that you can get some inspiration from that.

I'll try to cook up a PDF for you, maybe in the weekend.

Is that ok?

Hi Mathis,

thanks a lot for your help and hopefully your inspiration (maybe even with an example?)! The weekend is fine for me.

Re: Implementation of Xu_Froment_kinetics?

Does anyone have some idea for how to incorporate complex kinetic rates(instead of the simple Arrhenius rate expression as in FLUENT)?

In view of the complexity of the kinetic model from Xu_Froment, I would like some comments on its implemenation in Fluent.

Thanks in advance!

It is a very old post. And I can not find the author of the post anymore.

Does anyone still have the UDF example for this steam reforming? Please contact me, thanks a lot!
