Hi there,

anybody can help how to solve for the motion of a cylinder due to vortex shedding? I have solved the stationary cylinder and the vortices. However when the cylinder starts moving a differential equation has to be solved?

Any ideas? Regards

You could use the 6DOF solver included in Fluent. Of course, reduced to only 1 degree of freedom: translation on vertical axis.

Does that involve the use of UDF?

As I already mentioned, the 6DOF solver is included in the Fluent solver since 6.2 version. If you do not have a Fluent 6.2, then you will need the 6DOF solver in the UDF form to compile and include it in the older versions of Fluent. But be careful, the 6DOF solver ("dynamic mesh") does not appear in the menu unless you have first activated the unsteady solver!
