Hello,

I want to run GAMBIT under Win xp, but I don't quite get it running. Apperently the problem is, that I do not have a "win x server". Would someone be so kind to explain to me what exactly this x server is, what it does and which one I can use to make GAMBIT run under Xp. Are there any alternatives to the one proposed by FLUENT:: Exceed. .

Thank you very much for your help,

Philip

There are other X Servers out there (like HOBLink X11) but Exceed is part of your Gambit licence so you have paid for it, it is tested with Gambit and available as download from the user servicecenter. So why not use it?

Hello,

well thanks, but could someone still explain to me what exactly an X Server is and how and why I have to use it? Are there any free (foremost light) version of an x server that work with GAMBIT?

Thanks.

Gambit is written for the X Windows system which is commonly used on Unix machines. If you want to run Gambit under MS Windows you will need an program that emulates an X Windows System and that is the X Server. I am not aware of any free X Servers but i stopped at the 2nd google page so you might come with something if you dig deeper. Talking of "light Versions", the Exceed version that comes with Gambit is already very light. You can run Gambit but you wont geed any goodies like OpenGl support.

Thank you very much for your answer. Once that X-Server started... does it just run in the background and I start GAMBIT as I would start any other programm under XP or do I start Gambit out of the Window of the X-Server.

Another question is: do I need an internet connection in order to run GAMBIT. (I am just asking because it is called an X - SERVER). I am sorry if this question might sound dumb... but in terms of informatics I am not an expert; I just want to use the CFD program. So is it a server who connects to something or is it just the name of the thing?

Thank you again.

I think the name is confusing. Maybe it has server capabilitys but to be honest, i didnt read the manual . I just installed the thing to get Gambit running. The Gambit launcher will start Exceed for you so you dont have to do anything. It will run in the background and a small icon pops up in the system tray. It also appears that Gambit wants an network connection or it will refuse to start. If you block gambit.exe with a firewall it wont start. I dont know if this is has something to do with Exceed.

Hello,

I have found, that there are two different Exceed progs: XServer and Exceed 3D. Are those two needed or does one replace the other? In this case, which one is the more efficient one?

Thanks again.

I think cygwin (search google) comes with a free x server, but I don't know if it'll work with GAMBIT or not; I just use Exceed.

There is indeed an X-server with Cygwin. I couldn't make it work with Gambit, but then again, I didn't try very hard. There is very little point in doing this, as the Gambit license also includes Exceed.
