Packed Bed Reactor

Hi all, I am doing a project regading Packed Bed Reactor. And i have done 2d case very easily now the problem with 3d case. I am not getting how to create a geometry and meshing for packed bed reactor in GAMBIT.I need to insert solid spheres in cylinder. And i need to specify two phases like solid as well as liquid. if any one know about this pls help me. with advance, Thank you very much

Re: Packed Bed Reactor

Can you explain more on the actual problem you are solving, maybe I can help. I have modeled a pebble bed in Gambit even though it was not in a cylinder.

Re: Packed Bed Reactor

Thank u for your response Margaret, my packed bed contain the following specifications. length of the column-1m and diameter of the column-5.5cm packings diameter -16cm(sphere) here i finished my geometry with like an structured packing.. like i arranged the down rows with 4 spheres in square format arrangement, and then i arranged next row of spheres at center of the squares of the below row... while i was going to this packing one of my friend suggested me to give the orientation of 6 or 7 degrees to spheres like tat.. how to do that? And then which type of meshing will be preferable for packings (spheres) and cylinder for getting fine grid. thank u sir,for taking interest to clarify my doubts and spending your valuable time to me. shankar

Re: Packed Bed Reactor

Shankar, I have found out from my case that unstructured mesh works best. Also, are the spheres in contact with each other, if so, you may need to separate them a little bit. One approach that I found helpful was to determine symmetry of the model and maybe just model a small portion of the bed, like one-fourth or even one-eighth of the model, that way you will deal with smaller mesh that Gambit can handle. You may also want to use size-functions in order to handle the gaps between the pebbles as well as to have very fine mesh near the walls. I hope this helps.

Can anybody tell me how can i create a random packed bed with spheres inserted in the cylinder using Gambit ????? My D/dp ratio is 5.
This thing can be done in STAR-CCM+ but I don't have an access. So if somebody can tell me where can I download it ?
