How do you do a fluent CFD analysis for a boat?

Aloha,

I am a mechanical engineering student at the University of Hawaii and as my groups senior design project we are designing and building a completely autonomous surface vehicle. Currently we are trying to do a CFD analysis of the hull so that we may design a hull with good flow properties.

This being said we are having alot of problems trying to do the analysis. We open the work bench and open the fluent project. We imported a solidworks model of our hull and meshed it. From there we can't seem to get anything to work. We have searched all over on line looking for tutorials but have had no luck. The only thing we have found is the airfoil tutorial but in that analysis it says we have to do it in a 2d analysis because it takes the cross sectional area of the airfoil.

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

you can use ansys cfx for the analysis

and also for the problem of boat you can do the analysis by simplifying the problem as two plates connected to each other and flow in partially submerged in water

Hi UHMStudent,

Yeah, I feel your pain =(

First of all, when you import from Solid Works you essentially obtain a blob in ANSYS 13 or 12 or 11 that you cannot edit. So, build it in ANSYS is my suggestion. I know it's not preferred but that is essentially what I think may be a good solution to the problem.

I have had a similar problem when importing a geometry from SW to ANSYS, so I just rebuilt the geometry in ANSYS.
