Import Maya models into gambit.

I'm trying to import a maya model into Gambit. I export the model from Maya as a .iges and then import it into Gambit. However, I can't select the model once it's imported to mesh it nor can I export it as a mesh as it will say that it contains a error. can anyone shed some light on knowledge that I'm missing here, please?
