Default Quick Particle Tracking Question

I want to track massless (fluid elements) particles in fluent 6.3.26 and am not concerned with diffusion.

I understand that this can be performed using DPM by creating a particle with the same density as the fluid, but this would requires a lot of needless calculation.

The other option seems to be to use pathlines.

Can pathlines be used to track fluid elements for an unsteady (transient) simulation? Or is there a better option?

My simulation is a single phase, incompressible internal flow using the laminar flow solver, with an unsteady boundary profile.

Many thanks.
