Is FLUENT Capable to sumilate shallow lake dynamic
I would like to construct a 3D model for a shallow lake dynamics. it is 30 km x 14 km with 1.5 m avarge depth. is fluent able to simulate such this shallow lakes.

Re: Is FLUENT Capable to sumilate shallow lake dyn
what you wanna do with that? it sounds really cool. Just imagine, how the mesh would be with respect to aspect ratio.

Re: Is FLUENT Capable to sumilate shallow lake dyn
So i understood that. the problem will be in the mesh. Also we can not simulate shallow lakes with CFD softwars. is it correct. in your opinion what is the minmum aspect ratio. is this any way to work with shallow volumes

Re: Is FLUENT Capable to sumilate shallow lake dyn
I don't know what you wanna simulate and I can be completely wrong. I didn't say that it is impossible. Too big aspect ration makes difficulties in convergence behaviour. 10 could be acceptable, maybe even more. It depends on the flow. Couldn't you just cut a part of the lake for simulation?

Re: Is FLUENT Capable to sumilate shallow lake dyn
I would like to simulate the lake hydrodynamics in 3D. then i will focus to study one of the pollutions behevior through the lake.

Re: Is FLUENT Capable to sumilate shallow lake dyn
It is clear you would simulate hydrodynamics. Otherwise, you wouldn't need Fluent. If it is lake, what are boundary conditions then? walls on the bottom and boundaries for open air above the free water surface? There is probably no buoyancy through the lake depth, I guess. You wanna know when pollutants cross a distance of 30km, don't you? it could be possible.

Re: Is FLUENT Capable to sumilate shallow lake dyn
I will give you a clear idea about my project. i am going to costruct a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model taking both hydrodynamics and water quality into account. This model will provide a global understanding of the lake dynamics. The model will then be used to identify the significant sources and causes of pollution to the lake in a controlled manner. It will finally be used to investigate practical scenarios that could be implemented to relieve some of the pressures put on the lake. as you said the boundaries is wall in the bottom , air at the surface. now again is fluent able to do what i am going to do. or do i need to go to another softwar. please advise

Re: Is FLUENT Capable to sumilate shallow lake dyn
You may have problems with modeling in Fluent. Probably, you will have. Anyway,I suppose that this task as most of others should be solved most easily using FVM method and thus, if Fluent won't help, then no other FVM software won't help as well. I would trust Fluent.
Good luck |
Re: Is FLUENT Capable to sumilate shallow lake dyn
As far as I know, this kind of problems are usually modelled by solving the shallow water equations rather than the full NS. Not sure if these equations are built into Fluent.

Re: Is FLUENT Capable to sumilate shallow lake dyn
You should use a shallow water model or potential flow theory to simplify the problem. To use FLUENT's full NS model is not a practicable idea.

Your project must be over now, anyways for others seeking the same,
"Flow-3D" has an option to model shallow flow. One can check this link: http://www.flow3d.com/resources/news...low-model.html |
