Problem in using DEFINE_SOURCE for continuity

I have calculated the variation in the mass for a phase during a time step, the unit of which is 'kg'. According to the UDF guide for unsing DEFINE_SOURCE, I get the source term as a mass generation-rate/volume value, with the cell volume and time step divided. After integrated in Fluent, it makes the calculation unconverged. However, if only divided by the cell volume, the calculation can converge. Anyone could tell me the right way to deal with the source term for continuity equation?
