Meshing adjacent volumes

How can one mesh two adjacent volumes, which share portion of a face (complete face of one volume and portion of the face of the other). When I try to connect these two faces, I get message that "The call to connect on list of faces resulted in no actual connect operations." If I don't do connect, each face is meshed independently, resulting in disjointed mesh.

split face (the biggest one) with the smallest one.
You can check the connectivity with the icon at the bottom, next to the examine mesh icon (with the 3 colors blue, green, red)
The volume should appear in blue, the smallest surface (interface between the 2 connected volumes ) in pink

You could also unite the two volumes.

Thank you for the help -mAx. It is really mind-boggling how this never got mentioned in the manual. For all practical purposes manual is almost useless.

To dmorian: Thanks for the tip, but I need these volumes to be all of different materials, so uniting them is not an option.
