How to open Icem mesh in Ansys Fluent?

Hi

I am new to Ansys Fluent and Icem, having previously used Gambit and Fluent. I need some help regarding the Solver and Output process from Icem...in order to output a mesh file which can be opened in Ansys Fluent 12.0.

With Gambit and Fluent, it was always very simple - to set the solver in Gambit to Fluent 5/6, and to save the mesh as a .msh file, and just read the mesh file in Fluent.

Icem is saving my mesh file as an unstructured mesh file .uns but I can't seem to open this in Ansys Fluent.

Does anyone have any help on this, or a tutorial guide or something, that would enable me to open my Icem mesh file in Ansys Fluent?!

I apologise as I know this is probably a very basic question, but would really appreciate any help you could give :)

I do not use Fluent, but the process should be the same as my solver:

1) in the output tab, click the red tool box and select Fluent as the solver
2) Select the BC Button to the right of the tool box
a) Expand the relevant tabs (usually mixed/unknown and surfaces mixed/unknown)
b) For each boundary you plan on applying a condition: expand it, click Create new, and apply the appropriate condition
3) Once all boundaries are set, click the rubiks cube looking button and export the file

Someone with more Fluent experience might want to add to/correct what I have said, but this should get you going

Hi!!
I don't think that it mesh can work. i think ICEM is workin only on edge or vertex. it doesnt work on mesh. Just Like CAD soft ware.
Hope it helps

Thank you rwryne i got it working :-)

I have tried this, but although i created a msh file when i tried to open it with fluent i get an error.

fluent tries to read mesh file and give me (varies with the mesh, i have tried with the 2Dpipe and 2Dcar meshes from ICEM tutorial)

xxxx nodes
yyyy quadrilateral cells, zone 10
zzzz 2D interior faces, zone 11
377 2D walls, zone 12

Building ...
mesh

Error:
FLUENT received fatal signal (ACESS VIOLATION)

What I am doing wrong?

Thx for answer.

I'm not too sure, the only time I've seen that error is when I accidentally tried to open a 2D mesh in the 3D mode. Sorry I can't be of more help.

I think this is the proper link where I can post the same problem(meshing) that I am facing by ICEM CFD. I am trying to transfer my .msh file (that was made by ICEM CFD) to FLUENT. I am following this command in FLUENT: FILE>READ>MESH
and read the .msh file in FLUENT. After reading the file in FLUENT, I have found that I cannot find boundary conditions in FLUENT that I have assigned in ICEM CFD during transferring file to FLUENT. I have followed this way to find the boundary conditions in FLUENT: DEFINE> BOUNDARY CONDITIONS. Would you please let me know, how I can see boundary conditions in FLUENT that I have assigned in ICEM CFD.

This has happened to me before. I figured out the reason it happened was because i created a new part in ICEM AFTER i meshed the geometry. This still allows you to set the Boundary Conditions in ICEM, but they will not transfer over because they are not actually par tof the mesh. You should run the mesh as the last stop before the output.

Hope this helps :)

xy plot in FLUENT

I am trying to save my plot/graph in FLUENT after covereged the solution. I am following this command:

Solution XY plot> Options> Write to File > Write....> Enter vel.xy as the XY File Name and click OK

I am getting the below error and the folder created a file name vel, however there is no points information. Please let me know how I can save xy plot.

Error: %cx-raise-window: wta[1] (integer)
Error Object: #f

All boundary types are "wall"

I am using ICEM CFD 12.1 to generate a mesh, and am trying to load a mesh file (*.msh created with ICEM) on FLUENT 12.1. In FLUENT/Problem Setup/Boundary Conditions, I can see all the zones where I specified boundary condition on ICEM, but "Type" is "wall" for all the zones. I know I can modify the boundary condition on FLUENT, but I was wondering if this is this always the case.

On ICEM, I didn't know how to specify "Zone id" when specifying boundary conditions, so I just gave random numbers. I thought this might be the reason why all the boundary types are "wall". Could anyone tell me how to specify "Zone id" in ICEM/Output/Family boundary conditions/ when Output Solver is Fluent_V6?

***** Added 2hr later *****
For some reason, I was able to export the boundary condition from ICEM correctly when I tried several more times... I don't really know what was wrong. Anyway, it worked well when I left "Zone id" as "0" which is the default.

Did you solve this problem? I am getting the same one.

.msh file to .iges file

Hello,

I have a big problem. I cant convert from .msh file of a 3D geometry to .iges file format.
Could someone tell me how to get this done ?
Everytime I am trying exporting through the GAMBIT way, it is crashing.
Is there a workaround or other alternate path ?

Best regard,
R.Roy

for 2d geometry, you must be sure every curve has been associate to edges.

CFD-1987 June 25, 2012 11:59

I am having the same problem miyashin and although i tried everything i can't find what's wrong.....have you found what's happening????

Hi every one

I want to know how can I make aerofoil in 2D OR 3D in Ansys 13-14-15 ?
Thanks

pakk October 14, 2014 05:38

The question you ask now is too vague to be answered.
What do you mean "make aerofoil"? Design one? Analyze one? Import geometry? Create geometry? Make mesh? Optimize one? Unless you have a 3D-printer or something similar, you can not literally "make" one.

Radwanma October 14, 2014 05:49

hi

Thanks , I want to creat aerofoil in ANSYS FLUENT, PLEASE .

pakk October 14, 2014 06:09

That does not help at all.

I don't know where you start. (do you have geometry? do you have mesh? do you have other things?)
I don't know where you want to go to. (do you want to analyze your design? improve your design? start a design?)

If you can not make your question more clear, I'll have to assume that you don't know what you want, and then I can not help you.

How can I darw an aerofoil by using ansys ? is it ok are understand what I mean ?

pakk October 14, 2014 07:35

*Open Workbench
*Add a geometry, so you can open Designmodeler
*Sketch/model the aerofoil in the way you want
*Go to the Ansys Mesher
*Mesh the geometry with CFD settings
*Go to Fluent
*and so on

Is this the first time that you will use Ansys software? Didn't you follow a tutorial?

Radwanma October 14, 2014 07:40

soory How can I darw an aerofoil by using ansys ? is it ok do understand what I mean ?

Radwanma October 14, 2014 07:43

hi

Thanks , I want to is there any easy way to draw the aerofoil without using the designmodel ?

ghost82 October 14, 2014 07:45

Radwamna,
you can draw your airfoil by importing points, creating edges, surfaces and volumes (if 3d).
You can draw the model in cad (autocad, solidworks, or what you want...) and importing into your favourite pre-processor software.
If you are not able to draw geometry, refer to other forums, related to use of cad softwares.

pakk October 14, 2014 08:56

Radwanma,

We can only read what you type.
You want to draw an aerofoil using ansys, but then suddenly you don't want to use designmodeler. You should have included that in the question.

Please, can you give a detailed question of what you want? Using at least three sentences? You keep repeating that you want to make/draw an aerofoil, but if you want a detailed answer, you should ask a detailed question.

fluent not showing mesh

Hi friends,
Lately my ansys fluent 15 is not showing the mesh file that I did in ICEM. Instead it is showing just a white screen in the mesh region.
Can anyone give any valid suggestions.

Radwanma June 9, 2015 15:38

Hi All,

Does anyone have an idea how can I do a mesh for 3 blades wind turbine in ICEM ?. I have made the geometry but I have made many mistakes with my mesh !!!! , please ?

Regards,

you have to turn on "Embed Graphics Windows" when you are opening fluent.
