Fluent Parallel Programing using Windows HPC 2008
Hii,
I am building a 4 node compute cluster for running Fluent using the Windows HPC 2008 software. I am absolutely new to this and had few questions. 1. In the Fluent Launcher, it asks for the Machine List. What is the format of that? 2. I have created a head node, and a compute node (checking for 2 nodes now). When I start Fluent Launcher and input the parameters and try Launching it, no connection takes place. It does show that it is receiving data from the other computer in the Networking box, but it is not getting reflected in Fluent. Please help me with this, I will come up with more questions once these steps are clear. Thanks a lot Santosh |
first you must sure that these computers can visit each other in network neiborhood

Hi,
Have you looked at the Fluent guide for HPCS 2008 ? "Configuring and Launching FLUENT 12.0.16 on Microsoft HPC 2008" http://www.fluentusers.com/support/i...nfaq/hpc12.htm Did you tryed to passed the diagnostics from HPC Server ? By the way, with the fluent launcher you shouldn't have to give him a node list, the HPCS scheduler will provide that to Fluent. Best regards, Tom |
No, I do not have that. My institute did not allow access to that website, maybe I will ask them.
If you have a copy, could you please send me. Thanks a lot |
Bump.. Please help.

Please help.:confused::confused:

Ansys
Hey... tell me your problem again. i think I can resolve it....
Martin :))) |
Thanks for posting Martin. But I could solve it. Now set up a 4 node private cluster for Fluent simulations.. :):)
|
ok Good :)))... Good luck man. I have worked on linux and windows both of them.
|
Martin,
I had one doubt though. I had to install Fluent on all the 4 nodes, as the MPICH2 package was needed. Is there any other way to do that without installing Fluent in all the machines? Thank you. |
Dear !
as MPICH2 (Message passing interface)is the best network protocol or software like for good communication and maximum processor performance as well as memory. tell me in detail you need to install mpich2 or what else you want? |
Martin,
Sorry, you didn't get my question. In order to run Fluent in parallel, I am using mpich2 as the MPI Architecture. Now, the Fluent in installed on my Head Node, and all the compute nodes are connected to the Head Node. Now I am running Parallel-Fluent using the Fluent Launcher. While Launching, it gives an error, MPICH2 not found on the compute nodes. Hence, I install Fluent in each one of them, and run it again, and now it works. So, my question is, is it possible to run Parallel -Fluent without installing Fluent in all the compute nodes? If yes, then where can I find the MPICH2 package for the particular Fluent version. Thank you |
yeah. you can!
share the head node fluent folder and check if it is accessing from all nodes. then in this share folder of fluent find the multiport folder and see there mpi folder. there is a file of smpd and other files also, copy all files in your system32 or syswow64 (in case of 64 bit) folder. go to command line and install smpd service by typing smpd -install you have to install this service in all your nodes and there is also a file of cluster manager where you can see all your nodes and head node are online highlighted by green line. so have you got it?;) |
Wow, thanks a lot. Got it perfectly well. I had installed smpd in all the other systems manually after Fluent installation. This idea din't strike me earlier.
Thanks again.. |
ook... good luck friend. tell you have you ever worked on ansys 12 whether on linux or windows HPC ?
|
No never. I am working on Fluent 6.3 version. :(

parallel fluent
Hi all,
Can any one tell me how to run parallel fluent on 16 processors 2 node cluster using mpi command. I have 8 processors on each node. thanks frnds |
first tell me your scenario ...
I mean.. which version of Ansys you are using and what you want to do exactly ? |
hi all,
I had a question which I cant find any answer in fluent userguide or other helps. I want to have fluent in parallel mode on some nodes(and each node has some cpu cores) but nodes dont have same operating system. some of them have linux amd64 and some have win64. I dont know if I can spawn nodes or not; and if I can, how should be the machine list; should linux systems and windows systems have same username and password to do that or not? thsnks for any help |

I am running Fluent 14 on 2 nodes using Windows 7. I first did a network of these 2 computers; then I set up Fluent and Intel MPI. The Fluent directory is shared in the network as the working directory of Fluent. I am launching Fluent with 8 processes and it does not hangs when opening. Now it is iterating for the solution but it's taking too long between iterations. I mean, it's kind of pausing after each iteration and it'll take too long to reach convergence if I don't improve this issue. I assume this is due the communication between pcs is delayed or there is a kind of bottleneck in the network. I am please asking you for an advice in this. Thanks in advance, César |
Hello César,
It seems like you are running heavy simulation. I have noticed one thing that you are doing pretty well with intel MPI or as a suggestion use MPICH or MPICH2 then see the difference. You can try this on Linux as well and see if there is any change. Thanks, Martin |
Oh, right! It would be good to try these 2 options out, but I may have to do it via command line since in the GUI launcher of Fluent 14 are not available, at least in the version I'm running. I'd like to try this in Linux but now it's urgent to obtain results for my thesis. Maybe later when I have more free time.

Hi Martin,
Hope you are doing well. I'm facing a problem now trying to add another CPU to the ones I told you before in the past thread. This new machine has Windows XP - 64bit as OS. As I told you I have 3 machines with Windows 7 running Fluent in parallel. The MPI for these 3 machines is Intel. I followed the steps to set the MPICH2 as you suggested in the next quoted message: Quote:
Now I'm back again with the 3 machines I had before while I fix this problem. Please, give me an advice. I'm sure this can be solved. Thanks in advance, César |
