I have seen some other questions about this; however, they seem a bit out-of-date. Is it possible to export a mesh file from FLUENT in either version 18 or 19? (From the main FLUENT program, not FLUENT meshing)

For example, I have a tet mesh that I made in ANSYS and then converted to polyhedral in FLUENT. I would like to export the polyhedral mesh file and import it into OpenFOAM.

There are two openfoam utilities for this: fluentMeshToFoam and fluent3DMeshToFoam.
Have you looked into these? I don't get what's so special about Fluent 18/19.

@LuckyTran: I am trying to use fluentMeshToFoam to convert from FLUENT mesh format to OF. However, unless I am mistaken, I understand those tools work on a .msh file, not the FLUENT .cas file.

So, my question is whether it is possible to export a .msh file from FLUENT, for those specific versions?

Hi,

I couldn't find the direct method/command to export a .msh file from Fluent (v19.1). Instead I'm doing the followings to get the .msh file from .cas file:

1. In Fluent Solution Mode (normal mode), write a .cas file
2. Launch Fluent in the Meshing Mode by ticking "Meshing Mode" in the Fluent Launcher
3. Read the .cas file just saved by File>Read>Mesh... then it prompt "Reading a case file as a mesh file results in loss of boundary conditions." Press OK.
4. Write the mesh as .msh by File>Write>Mesh...

There may be a better way but this worked for me, though I haven't tried with polyhedral mesh.

You can use fluentMeshtoFoam on a case file

A fluent .msh file is just a stripped down .cas file
