full simulation of an aircraft with propeller effect

Hi all,

I searched the forum but no clear answers.

In order to simulate an aircraft with a propeller at the front (let's say it is a cessna 172):

In gambit:
(1)Can I simulate the propeller by a circular zero-thickness surface?
(2)If yes, should I split the volume with that surface?
(3)Which boundary condition must be given to that surface?

In fluent:
(4)With that boundary condition given in gambit, during steady state analysis, will it suck the air in front of the propeller and give it back with much more velocity/pressure?
(5)Can I give the rotating effect of air after the propeller?

- Yes you can.
(2)If yes, should I split the volume with that surface?
- This is correct operation.
(3)Which boundary condition must be given to that surface?
- Fan will be good.

In fluent:
(4)With that boundary condition given in gambit, during steady state analysis, will it suck the air in front of the propeller and give it back with much more velocity/pressure?
- In b.c. panel you can input value of constant pressure jump - Force generated by propeller divided by area of propeller surface.
(5)Can I give the rotating effect of air after the propeller?
- Default option in fan b.c. panel allows some swirl velocity but I don't understand how this works. So I input udf function to simulate rotating velocity.
But if your model is a simplification of propeller by surface I'm not seeing a point to include rotating effect in a simulation.

Hi Kamil,
