How to import FLUENT animation files(.hmf) to Techplot
 
Hi all,
Need help on this...
  • I have generated animation files (.hmf formate )for every 10 timesteps in fluent. but I don't know how to load this data in Tech plot...
  • In Tech plot tried "load data > Fluent multiple file selection" but it doesn't work...
PLz reply..

Hi

You collect the data from fluent data files at various instances (u can do this using export in tecplot format). Since these files are in Tecplot format, you just read all of them in tecplot. Use animation in Tecplot based on frames.

I found the right procedure for above problem...

we need fluent "case & data files" for different time steps...

> Go to FULENT " file > Write > Autosave "...set the frequency of saves for case and/or data files, and the root filename.

For steady flows you will specify the frequency in iterations, and for unsteady flows you will specify it in time steps (unless you are using the explicit time stepping formulation, in which case you will specify the frequency in iterations). If you define an Autosave Case File Frequency of 10, for example, a case file will be saved every 10 iterations or time steps.

> Now go to tech plot " File > load data > fluent data > multiple files ".....selectall case & data files...

Then we can perform the manipulation as per requirement...:)

Hi

That is a crude way of doing animation. for instance you have load os .cas and .dat files for 10sec at a frequency of 1e-03. You will end up with loads of the files suppose to be read by Tecplot. This makes your tecplot hang are cant read based on your ram.

I would consider this procedure only if i have few instacnes. However, the procedure where you collected in the form of tecplot format from Fluent will reduce the burden on Tecplot. This way you analyse many quantities without any problem.

For instacne, if you read fluent cas and data file in tecplot, check contours, you get few variables with correct names. Rest of all variables will appear with some name with number. You really dont know what you are plotting. Hence, the best way is collect in the correct format and use it in Tecplot to make sure you are collecting and analysing what you want.
