IBM System x3400 M3 to use as workstation

Dear All,
I use 'c' to solve CFD flow problems. As a compliment I got IBM System x3400 M3 with 16 GB(12.0 GB Usable) and Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5507 @ 2.27GHz, 2.26GHz(2 Processors). How can I use this System to run my programs.Thus, I would like to configure it now. Help Me. Either Windows, Ubuntu is suitable for me.
