new trends in 2014 for a cluster ?

Hello everyone,

I am asking for you help, because I am looking for some info, links, articles or any recent user experience about new trends in hardware for cfd computing. We would like to set up a cluster, but currently no having much knowledge on which architecture would be the best for our needs. Obviously the fastest for a given price. I've seen IBM released the Power 8, how does it compare to intel xeon arch or even i7 ?

We would mainly run an mpi fortran unstructured solver. Also, maybe we could go for gpu's, but considering that we should take also into account learning opencl, we are not sure that we would globally win.

So, what should be taken into consideration ? Which architecture offers the best flop/$ ratio, is it simple to estimate ?

Many thanks !

The guys at PADT Inc have experimented with what is the best bang for your buck given your target number of cores. They even offer to give you a part list if you prefer to build it yourself.

Hello, many thanks for the information :) We will have a look at what they propose and how it compares vs dell, fujitsu etc
