DDR4 vs DDR3

Hi guys,

Im totally newbie on hardware. but Im wondering is DDR4 rather better than DDR3? DDR4 is fairly expensive than DDR3 now, it is worth the money on it?

If we consider the almost same performance CPU, like 4820k and 5820k.

I want to buy a PC for CFD simulations. If DDR4 is not worth the money I will buy it now. If DDR4 is rather better, maybe I should hold to next year until the price of DDR4 jumps...

Best,

Greetings sharonyue,

There's a saying... although I don't recall the exact wording, but it goes something like this: "Only those who can afford to lose, are able to afford to win."

This to say that according to what I've briefly found after a bit of Googling, is that the current benefits for DDR4 are mostly on the power-saving side. The performance increase in comparison versus DDR3 at the same clock speed isn't always significant.
On the other hand, there is an increase in memory bandwidth indicated in the latest v3 Xeon processors, which seems to be related to either the use of DDR4 or the ability to handle higher frequencies.

Either way, regarding memory performance, you can draw some ideas from here: http://www.cfd-online.com/Forums/har...tml#post366672 post #17

Best regards,

There was an interesting article on AnandTech on DDR3 vs DDR4:
