I want to install an ITX specification computer (there is a need to take it out), and the cpu is selected between r9 5950x (16c) and i9 10980xe (18c). 5950x has much stronger single-core and multi-core performance than 10980xe. But 10980xe has four channels of memory while 5950x has only two channels, thus I worry whether the dual-channel memory have a memory bottleneck during the calculation, even making its calculation speed worse than 10980xe. I don’t need to consider the impact of the choice of cpu on the budget. So which one should I choose? Thanks a lot!

Hi,

I would pick neither.

The 10980xe has a higher theoretical memory bandwidth and should perform better in many CFD related workloads. It very much depends on the application and problem size. A 9800X will be just as good when you are completely bottlenecked by the memory bandwidth (check out the OpenFOAM benchmark thread for such examples).

You can find CFD benchmark cases where the new Ryzen 5000 series just dominate, but it is likely that memory bandwidth is not a limiter here:

https://openbenchmarking.org/test/pt...9d7d159337ae8d

For smaller problem sizes or if you run in serial, then the 5000 series is the best option you can go for. For serial workloads the 5950X will have the highest out-of-the-box boost frequency. The price is just not worth it in my opinion. A 5600X will be almost as good (and just as good if you can overclock to 5950X speeds, but that is not a certainty).
