I would appreciate some advice for following build, wether to go for Xeon or EpycRome

  • workstation under desk (so too much noise is an issue)
  • WIN 10 PRO license available
  • dual vs single socket (correct to assume dual socket opens more options in terms of mem bandwidth?)
  • bang for buck Epyc 7402 vs 7551 vs .. - am i right to assume that the ratio of memory channels vs cores has a sweet spot and that this ratio is the main driver for CPU selection? what is the currently the more optimal CPU to get
  • Max 2 jobs wiill run in parallel (typical cell count of 1 job is 30e6 cells external aero - once and a while heat transfer and DEM will be run
  • licenses excluded from build

small PS: Threadripper PRO seems to be an option vs EPYC according to https://www.servethehome.com/amd-thr...epyc-or-wepyc/

Hi Bram,
1/Dual socket Epyc Rome is the go. Please read the other HPC threads in the hardware forums.
2/a 2x 32 cores Epyc Rome workstation is 40% cheaper than a 64 cores threadripper pro workstation.
3/Do you use STAR-CCM+?

Best regards,
gui@trampoCFD

Hi Gui,

I came across this thread and was wondering how the answer changes if one of the main use cases is Star-CCM+?
