Not entirely hardware related, but is any of you guys using cloud solutions that offer pay per use, and what are your experiences?

Yes, we have used Penguin Computing for a couple of years for StarCCM+ simulations. It can be a good solution instead of bying a cluster if your demand is not 24-7 and your models are a couple of million cells and above. Especially if you pay software license pr. hour.

I really like CFD FEA Service, https://cfdfeaservice.it. Italian provider with lots of open-source pre-installed, e.g. OpenFOAM. It also comes with its own API and custom software/platform control if you like. VNC and ssh access for run-time case monitoring/adjustment/results processing are also available and easy to use.
