Nheni is on a distinguished road
Dear All,

I want to buy a new computer for ANSYS CFX transient flow simulations. I have 1 solver license, with 16 hpc license, my simulations are generally multicomponent gas mixture, and my expected mesh node numbers between 50 000 and 1 million. I read the general recommendations, and chose the processor and the memory type, but I am still uncertain.

Now I have Intel Core i9-10850K CPU (10 core, 2 memory channels), and DDR4-2933 memory type, 64 GB RAM. I want to substantially decrease my solver time (at least half).
I made my decision based on:
-Cores
-Memory brandwidth
-Memory channels
The one I choose:
-AMD Epyc 7302 (16 core, 8 memory channel) processor
-DDR4-3200 memory

My question:
-Is there other properties, which affect the solver time?
-How much ram do I need for these choices? I think 64 GB is
unnecessarily much.
-Do you have experiances, about approximately what percentage is expected to be shorter the simulation time?

Thank you,
Henrietta

Right now I would not recommend an Epyc 7302. You only need a single CPU, and the newer Epyc 7313P is both faster and cheaper.
64GB of RAM is the minimum sensible amount for these CPUs. You need 8 DIMMs to fill all memory channels, and the smallest DDR4-3200 reg ECC modules come in 8GB capacity.
Using all 16 cores, this setup should be more than enough to cut your solver times in half.

16 hpc license = possibillity to use 16 cores ? If yes , why not Epyc 7313 for example ?
