Hello!
I am planning to buy an EPYC-based workstation for external aerodynamics in OpenFoam (~20 million cells). The general specification is: - Motherboard: Supermicro MBD-H11SSL-I AMD EPYC 7000 Series - CPU: Rome 7502P 32C/64T 2.5G 128M - RAM: 8x16GB Samsung DDR4-3200 CL22 (2Gx4) ECC reg. SR - SSD: Samsung PM983 960GB NVMe PCIe3x4 M.2 22x110 1.3DWPD SED Opal - HDD: Seagate 3.5'' 6TB SATA 6Gb/s 7.2K RPM Cache 256MB My question is, what kind of OS would be the best for OpenFoam on this combination of motherboard and CPU? So far I have used the desktop version of Ubuntu, but when I go to the OS compatibility chart (https://www.supermicro.com/Aplus/sup..._7002-UP-1.cfm) only server OS's are mentioned. Does it mean I have to install the server version of the Ubuntu or maybe there is a better option? Thank you very much for your help. |

You can use pretty much any distribution you want, as long as it is not super niche.
If it's a variant of a server OS on the compatibility list, even better. But don't let that stop you from using your favorite distro. |

Hi, thank you for the answer. So the compatibility chart does not say other OS will not work but which one should work? I'll try the Ubuntu then and if there are any problems I'll switch to the server version.

It is supposed to be what the manufacturer used for testing and validation. And you might be able to get some more specific support if you encounter a problem with one of the OS listed there. But I would not count on that.
Such lists of supported OS are definitely not exclusive. I have been using "unsupported" operating systems pretty much exclusively with these types of boards. Never had any issues that could be traced back to the OS not being on the supported list. |

I believe that the desktop version will let you install server software from the same repository. Typically the server version is only different in the initial software layout. So a server would not by default have a graphical user interface. In recent years, I have installed proxmox (a debian 11 server os set up for cloud serving in your home lab). I dont use the live migration, but like the easy of setting up virtual machines. One of my machines is typically windows 10. For the graphical software I install xfce4. Recently, on an upgrade, I could not get it to work right with my AMD Vega 56 card. So now I am using Window Manager. Works, but not as nice.
