i9 13900HX vs r9 7945HX
 
Greetings to all,
I am planning to buy laptop for CFD, FEA, CAD. Basically a Daily driver laptop which can handle above workloads decently.





My query is which could comparatively better choice for the above workloads



Intel i9 13900HX (Which has 8 P-cores and 16 E-cores)



or



Amd r9 7945HX ( which has 16 cores)


I completely understand that gaming laptops are not specifically meant the above workloads.



As of now I am unable to build a desktop workstation, due to my mobile nature of work I am planning to buy a laptop as a interim fix. I am confused which one to go for between as Intel P-core, E-core architecture and Amd has all cores as P-core type.



I appreciate all your time and comments.

For the CFD you should focus on the memory system bandwidth. So on both: two channels filled at highest speed memory.


For the CAD, the GPU is important. That means basically the same requirements as gaming.


The FEA typically is comparable to a small CFD run that can be run all in-memory. So go for at least 32 GB of memory.

Amd r9 7945HX supports only 64Gb of RAMs, while i9-13900hx - 128GB. This can be a starting point for choosing the processor.

Not sure. 64GB is probably fine for your application. The Ryzen has more cache (64MB versus 36MB) so might perform a bit better on CFD. Maybe just look for the best deal on either one.

As you said, I will surely look for best deal on laptops containing either of cpus.



1. Other than CFD, Would increased Cache size make any difference in performance on FEA, CAD workloads between Ryzen and Intel chips?


2. The ryzen laptop has only DDR5-4800 mHz RAM compatibility and Intel laptop has DDR5-5600 mHz RAM compatibility, so based on this which laptop could be a better choice (considering 64GB RAM for both the laptop).


Kindly throw some light. Once again I appreciate your time and comments.

Answer 1: The Cache is very helpful when the most often accessed data can fit, because a cache hit is much faster than retrieving data from memory into cache. (The CPU stages data from cache, not directly from memory). I would think that FEA will benefit. If you are planning to use the processor graphics, instead of a separate gpu, the cache will also be important for CAD, because the on-chip gpu uses the cpu memory and not the gpu memory.


Answer 2: I believe the Ryzen laptop should be able to use DDR5-5200 because that is what the chip spec says. The intel has a 7.5% bandwidth advantage, but the ryzen has a larger cache. This made me conclude that these chips are of similar performance. Hence, I recommended to look for the best price for a laptop with either chip. Note that laptops with a separate gpu are to be preferred for CAD (and games) so should warrant a premium over laptops that use the on-chip gpu.
