Dear Frends

I have Dell inspiron 5110 with i5 second generation processor, 4 gb RAM and 1GB nvdia graphics card. This laptop is used only for the ICEM CFD meshing and no simulation is run. I got this one in May 2012 for $600 and laptop with same specs (new model) is almost pricsed at $600

Recently it stopped working and I get it inspected through local Dell shop and they said mother board is faulty and you need to replace it and it will cost around $180 with 3 months warranty.

What should I do? Should I go for the new laptop or I should get it replaced?

When you think about it 180$ is well below the price of a new laptop. if you are happy with this laptop and still think you can keep doing the same thing on it, then replace it.
If you want to upgrade so you can do simulations, the cheapest you can get is a LENOVO with an i7 and 8go i think for 1000$ or less.

It is back now. But it is showing i3 instead of i5 processor. Hardware guy said bring it back and we will match bios with cpu and it will again show i5 in bios and windows. Is it correct?

No I never had to match anything in bios. The cpu is recognized automatically in windows as it should be...

so it is a fraud? can we show the wrong info about processor in bios?

The bios is different differs from a pc to another one. but in general it is difficult (even impossible) to change info in it...
I don't want you to jump directly into conclusion. can someone give an opinion about this ?
What's left is google , try to search, see if this happens, search something like "pc showing wrong cpu"...

I talked to them (dell local dealer) on phone and they said bring laptop back tomorow. They said after bios update (infort of me) you will see i5 in bios and windows. I am not believing them ..............

I went to dell shop very next day. But they did not update bios infornt of me as per thier stance. Instead they kept laptop for full day and in evening I recieved it back.

Now I have i5 processor as it should be. But still cannot figure it out what happend behind the scenes.

I think they mounted an i3 processor instead of i5; I hope it was a mistake and not a fraud....

Unfortunatly it was a fraud because i was told that they are going to update bios infront of me within ten mintues. When I took my laptop to them to very next day (11 am) they asked to leave it with them and collect in evening at around 5.00 pm. Even if we install every thing (disk formatting, windows, drivers etc) from scratch, it should not take more than one and half an hour.

And they didn't accept that it was by mistake. They put blame on motherboard configured for i3 and thats why it was shwoing i5 as i3 processor.
