All, I am looking for a CAD software that is most closely like AutoCAD (Windows) for Linux/Ubuntu.

Any suggestions?

I've tested Draftsight. It only does 2D drawing which I am not very experimented, therefore my opinion might not be all that useful.

A great upside is that it can read and write *.dwg drawings.

Try QCad if you are interested in 2D drafting, or the OnShape cloud service if you need 3D modelling.

I would prefer something that doesn't require an internet connection, as Id like to do some patenting at some point in time and do not trust the security of the cloud. Also, I would prefer something as close to autocad as possible. I have downloaded freecad but haven't had the chance to really play with it. I was thinking about installing wine but I am not sure how autocad will run inside the virtual machine.

FreeCAD is good. If you consider installing wine - take a look on nanoCAD (Windows freeware, not open source!)

IMO for something 2D and free, currently the answer is DraftSight. Linux version is still in beta, but it works fine on Ubuntu 14.04.
Nothing else is adequate.
For a paid version, look at ARES Commander:

There are some IntelliCAD versions that run on Linux, but I haven't tried any.

I have tried running AutoCAD LT 2000 and AutoCAD 2006 via Wine and AutoCAD 2000i on a virtual machine, but all of them were buggy, slow, and painful.

I will give a +1 for FreeCAD, it can do everything I need it to do and more.
