Importance of CFD in mechanical engineering

Hello everyone! I have two question. I am a mechanical engineering student and I started reading about computational fluid dynamics. I want to know how much CFD Is important for a mechanical engineer and what are its applications. I also want to know where I can study CFD theory and software (not too difficult) if I have the bases of fluid dynamics and turbomachinery.

The most realistic answer could be: it depends. For example, it depends on how much are you interested in CFD or what type of job are you looking for. Obviously, the time you spend in CFD calculations on your daily activities it's linked to your occupation (Designer, Application Engineer, Fluid Dynamicist/Aerodynamicist etc.). As you can imagine, CFD can ideally apply to any topic where you basically have fluids in motion, then you can also add heat transfer, phase change etc.

On regards the other question, CFD is a difficult topic by definition, learning how to use a software doesn't mean improving your CFD skills. If you already have good fluid dynamics basis, I suggest you to buy a good book, like the one from Peric-Ferzinger or Versteeg-Malalasekera; at the same time you can also download the Ansys Student edition or OpenFOAM, you can find a lot of tutorials on the Web
