How could i improve an aircraft design using CFD?

Hi,

I have designed an aircraft studying Raymer's book. How could i improve this design using the 3d aircraft model and a CFD package?
Any ideas?

Thanks a lot!!

I am new here, but I think you should concrete more. CFD has a sample (tutorial) with a wing. I did it to learn how to work with the ansys workbench.

Thanks for the answer!

My question is how i could improve the design, studying the 3d aircraft geometry numerically with a CFD program!

For example studying the cp distribution along the wing, would be useful in order to improve the desing?

Any ideas about the results that i could take using CFD and would help me to improve aircraft design?

U can definitely improve your design if you have a good cfd software and the required computing power at your disposal...
You can improve your wing design by simulating flow over the wing designed by you and changing some parameters like chord, span, nose radius etc. n study its effect on the lift-drag characteristics...

Thanks thegodfather!

I have studied lift-drag characteristics changing some parameters like chord, spn, etc using xfoil and profili! Using CFD program like fluent, i will have more accurate results?

I am afraid I may not be the best person to answer this question...
I am just about to enter my senior year in mechanical engineering and have just started learning various numerical schemes to understand fluid motion...
I do not have a lot of experience in using cfd softwares... The idea of improving the design using cfd seemed just too appealing not to be given at least a try..
All the best... N do post if u succeed in improving it.. :)

normally, the "optimization" techniques are used along with CFD softwares ... Cp, Cd, as well as other parameters can be used as target.

If you are considering analysys of low reynolds number airfoils fluent will not give you better results than x-foil. Especially if you are using turbulence modelling of low-re airfoils you might have much worser results in comparison with x-foil.

As an example you can take a look at comparison of results by x-foil and Large Eddy Simulation at this link

http://persson.berkeley.edu/pub/uranga09iles.pdf

The results have the same accuracy for LES and x-foil, while, in the above case, LES will run for weeks on ordinary computer, while x-foil will do it in a fraction of second.
