I am interested in estimating the convection heat transfer coefficient of a cylinder moving in water. The length of the cynlinder can be taken as L and diameter as D and L/D ~ 2. The cylinder speed may be taken as 15 m/s.

I would be grateful if someone could suggest me an empirical technique/ formulae with theory for estimating the same.

thanx in advance

Set up a simple model with fixed cylinder & moving water (relativitity). You can tackle the heat input in 2 ways:

1. Macro - measure overall water temperature diffeence up & downstream & compute the heat-transfer. Work backwards to calculate the average heat-transfer coefficient.

2. Surface - from the solution, compute the surface temperature gradient & then onto the local & average surface heat-transfer coefficient.

Some packages will even allow the user to collect the surface fluxes.

These can be found in almost any standard college theat-transfer textbook.

"Fundamentals of Heat & Mass Transfer", Incropera & Dewitt, is a good one.

Bejan has a few good books.
