How to calculate the vorticity magnitude (S) in two dimensions

say

Sij = (du/dy-dv/dx)

S = sqrt(Sij.Sij)

what is the resultant of Sij.Sij (multiplication of two tensors)

could anybody help with this.

the vorticity is a vector field, not a tensor field, also in 3D ...

So, what is the multiplication of the two vector(or tensor) field.

The vorticity is just a vector. So take the magnitude of the vector. If you are talking about a 2D flow, then the vorticity vector has one nonzero component, and the magnitude is simply the absolute value of that component. I'm not sure I'm understanding the original question here...
