Yes you're right. Writing a matlab code and running it in matlab environment is a fool thing. CFD codes are heavy, let's immagine how they can become under Matlab. Maybe you can write a code in Matlab and make it as a stand-alone compiled program. Luca

Let's back up here. What kind of problems are you considering?

A steady 2D incompressible NS problem using FEM with reasonably simple geometry can be written in Matlab in perhaps a dozen pages, many of which are mesh generation and initialization of boundary conditions, and run in a few seconds on a standard desktop computer, with graphics output.

Now a few years ago when I was using a 300 MHz Pentium it would take several minutes, or even overnight for a large mesh after the problem was debugged, but that was then.

Matlab, with its integrated graphics, is an ideal environment to learn how to write a code and how a code works. The FEMLAB code was written in Matlab, although I understand that its developers have been (or maybe have by now) it C or C++.
