Can anyone please point me to some discussion of checkerboarding in the literature? I am writiing a report and some of my results have spanwise checkerboarding. I understand the phenomonon, I would just like some respectable sources (journal articles etc.) that I can reference.

The best source I am aware of as a reference about checkerboarding is the classical text book by Patankar, "Numerical Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow"
