A quiet word, if I may be so bold. You may find that it will become a little difficult during the next few months - given current international tensions.

You would surely place yourself on a safer path by moving into research-based code which you could maintain if things developed further? Very few folks would want to make too many long-term committments at this juncture.

Why don't you want to use OpenFOAM. It is more advanced than KIVA, free and does not come from the US.

Good point. Many CFD (and anciliary) codes come from places other than the US. If their government doesn't allow their vendors to deal with you, others always will.

The US is not the only country in the world that restricts what technology can go to Iran. The UK is equally strict as far as I know. It does pose an interesting question - if a bunch of UK (or US) citizens produce an open source code, are they responsible for keeping it from banned countries?

Ah, now that is a can of worms. I would say Open Source is open, and cannot be restricted in any way. By definition there is no control about who works on an open source development. We know that NASA makes certain codes available to US citizens and organisations only, but those are definitely not open source. Practically speaking, it is impossible to restrict the use of open source software, so legally speaking, no attempt should be made to do so.

So does that say that I can put absolutely anything I want up on the web as long as I call it and make it open source? If I created an open source site (anyone can contribute) dedicated to child pornography is that allowed? How about a cooperative effort to write a better open source nuclear bomb design code? I bet if the US government found a server physically located within the US with either of those items it would shut it down. It might not be able to stop others from using what's already out but it could make it hard to continue to develop. I actually hope they would shut either of those sites down.

Well, the fact is that literally everything (including child porn and nuclear technology) can probably be found somewhere on the web. You could close servers in the USA down, but the stuff will pop up somewhere else. You could block access to sites and others will pop up. I'm not saying you shouldn't prosecute people who trade in child porn or stolen technology, but you have to face the fact that you can't stop it at an IT level, so your efforts to combat it are perhaps best directed at some other level of the crime. For something to be Open Source, it cannot be exploitation (as is child porn) or based on IP theft (now this is a really sticky one to define and fight). But somehow I don't think this is a CFD debate

Oddly enough the US government seems more interested in shutting down or blocking access to overseas gambling sites than anything else. Funny old world!
