I am a engineering student and working on a project "Drag force reduction in heavy vehicles by changing aerodynamic shape". I hav some cfd software :
1.AUTODESK LAB PROJECT FALCON

2. AUTODESK SIMULATION CFD

3. FLUENT 6.2.36

4. SOLIDWORKS SIMULATION

Plz tell me which one give me batter result?? or i can choose anyone of them?? wht kind of accuracy i can achieve each one o f them?? plz help..plz reply..

Hi Adi,

I tried Project Falcon when it was first released. I was impressed by the ease of use, but (at the time) it was not giving physically reasonable results from the very limited tests. So I would drop it from the list.

What is Fd stand for in FALCON result? And if it is drag force then why am i getting lower drag force via calculation by using same coefficient of drag as shown in falcon.I m getting Cd approx 1.22 on a block of 1 m^2 cross section at the speed of 10m/s. then how it is possible that drag force calculated by the falcon is 83.189 N?? (Attached Photo)
While I am using formula for drag force .5*Cd*(rheo)*A*V^2 then i am getting 74.725 N (assuming the density of air 1.225 kg/m^3)...plz help if u can its really important for my project...or suggest me any alternative way...

Plz mail me if u can..my id is ADITYA_D90@YAHOO.COM
Thanks & Regards..

If you are seeking accurate results, I suggest you go with Fluent. It also has good tutorials for the begginers.

i strongly suggest you STAR-CCM+,since it is complete user friendly, has a strong solver and post process capabilities. By the way, especially in vehicle aerodynamics STAR-CCM+ is used widely.

For example the latest new, BMW choosed the STAR-CCM+ and some F1 teams uses STAR-CCM+ for aerodynamic problems.

i strongly advice..

Hi Adi,

Outside of option (1 - Project Falcon), the remaining (as well as Star-CCM+) are well established software. Any of them can be applied to your case.

Which one is better? It is usually a decision based on user preference, price and availability. Melih obviously think that Star-CCM+ is better, while Azita thinks that Fluent is better.

Accuracy? To a large extend, the mentioned software implement similar models and are potentially able of predicting the model with a similar accuracy. A large factor of influence in the accuracy is the user experience (and training/supervision and a bit of luck).

Drop me a PM - I will send you a one page document that may be relevant to you.
