I am just wondering if anyone here heard about any update on CUBIC mesher going Open Source?

Thanks!

I know nothing about this. I just notice that, today, on their site, any reference to the "lot of things changing over there" has disappeared and a brand new version just came out. However, cimsoft has just changed the name of their main product to Trelis, which might means something:

http://www.csimsoft.com/trelis.jsp

Still, in US, the code should be actually available to most of the potentially interested people, even if not open.

Hi, Paolo,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, Trelis is a commercial company selling cubic. I was hoping to get the open source version because I cannot afford the commercial version. And I am really interested in it's all hex meshing capability.

I never used it, so i don't know, but if you look at the manual:

https://cubit.sandia.gov/public/14.0.../cubithelp.htm

you will notice a strong similarity but also some more advanced meshing features. To cite some:

- THex (TQuad): converts a tetra (triangle) mesh in a hexa (quad) mesh by element splitting in 4 (3)

- More advanced (actually, almost arbitrary) grading functions for edges

- Tools for the hexa meshing of circular and spherical surface/volumes.

- Some additional hexa meshing tools for non conventional volumes

- Some parallel meshing capabilities

For all the rest it is quite similar to Gambit. I don't know if it also has boundary layer capabilities, but those are somehow reproducible with basic meshing tools, so it's not a real issue.

Of course i also am interested in Cubit going open as it would be very helpful in some projects. Still, i also heard of this some time ago and then nothing more.

What i was trying to say is that, csimsoft changing the name of its main product might mean that cubit could be experiencing "something". From the csimsoft page i quote:

"In 2012, Sandia announced that it is absorbing Cubit into an internal simulation workbench, so we launched the latest commercial and academic versions of Cubit with a new name, Trelis 14.0."

What does this mean? I don't know

yes. it is similar to gambit. Will it be beneficial, if one get the opensource? There are many problems a mesher face even with full support, how one is going to resolve code level problems? Keeping in mind that algorithms for CFD solver are taught in CFD courses but meshing algorithms are not !!!
