I'm planning to teach a class at San Jose State Univ. on aerodynamics and am looking for CFD software programs that run on PC's and MAC's that can solve for simple flows about 2-D airfoils in subsonic flow and wedges and cones in supersonic flows. Is anyone familiar with such software?

STAR-CD will run on pc's using the Windows 2000 or Windows XP operating systems and they have some sort of academic policy. I am not with adapco and therefore know nothing else about it. Check out their site at http://www.cd-adapco.com/

Hi!
try http://www.studentfluent.com/ it is a cheap Fluent version, that is limited to 20.000 cells. And It runs on Windows Pentium/Xeon XP and Windows Pentium/Xeon 2000. Ralf |

20k cells for any simulation especially airfoils (at an angle of attack) is a joke - at best it will produce nice (highly diffuse) color plots! If the objective of the course is for the students to learn something about the physics, then this code is, for the most part, insufficient (except for simple problems like flow in a channel)

Please have a look at the tutorials library 20 K Cell limit is a severe limit for 3D industrial problems but enough for 2D educational purposes

I've seen their website, etc. ... My comment was actually meant for 2d!! It all depends on what you want to gain from the simulation, and at what reynolds number and geometric complexity. Notice also that the original question was related to aerodynamics, which is mostly external flow, in which case 20k cells is even more of a problem

Paul,
Gridgen runs on both PCs and Macs, so it meets that part of your requirements. We have quite a large academic program, including the Gridgen Teaching Partnership that provides a large number of free licenses for use in a lab or class. If you're interest, please send an email to gridgen@pointwise.com. Best of luck. |
