Cooling Rate Uniformity

Hello -

I am heat treating a flat plate in a laboratory vacuum furnace. The quenching gas is helium and the gas flow is axial . The plate must be quenched at a cooling rate that is uniform throughout the plate with little or no variability.

My question is about the plate orientation with reference to axial gas flow. Should the plate be in parallel, perpendicular or in inclined orientation with respect to the axial gas flow to achieve uniform cooling?

PLease help using the boundary layer concept.

Thank you.
