Detached Eddy Simulation in industry
 

Hi,

I would like to know, if there are usefull applications in industry for DES yet!? I could imagine, that for aeroacoustics it will be pretty usefull...

and how about the automobile industry. Will DES be a good tool in the next two years for the outer flow?

It boils down to computation power. Industry prefers RANS methods at the moment as they provide solutions to the viscous Navier-Stokes equations on complex geometries within a few days of computing time. DES methods would require an order of magnitude (at least) more computation time to give the results, and industry cannot currently afford to wait that long.

Of course, free-shear flows and diffusion flames benefit from the time-resolved nature of DES, but in reality this simulation type has only been around for 10 years, and we are still in the infancy of understanding how best to use it. In all honesty, we are still learning how best to use LES, some 30 years after its conception! I would argue that for external aerodynamic flows, DES will become more prevelant in the next 5-10 years, not sooner.

I agree with Andrew. Just taking the case of Large Eddy Simulation applied to Aero-acoustics, It will take months time to get results. One can imagine in any industry, never mind if it is Automobile or Aerospace, I am pretty sure that, more developments yet to come to resolve this computational time/power sort of issues. In that way DES is one. May be in the coming 5 or 10 years, technical research may bring us new simulation techniques as you know turbulence modeling is one of the most hot research area now, will be in the near future.
