vortex method

Hi colleagues:

I am currently doing some readings on vortex method, which is entirely grid-free in the solution domain (similar to BEM).

For those who have worked in this area before, can you recommend any books/papers, that have detailed the numerical implementation of vortex methods?

Thanks in advance.

Hi, I would say the basic book you can read is the one by Katz and Plotkin. Another interesting book is the one by J. Moran. Luca

Re: vortex method

Thanks Luca. I will search for the books to understand more about it.

Luca, what you think about the current status of vortex method? Has it come to a stage that it is mature enough to be accepted as a global computational method for industry?

It is true in a way that flow turbulence can be resolved in an accurate manner, without adopting the turbulence models for Eulerian grid-base methods. However, how is the computational time of Lagrangian vortex method as compared to the conventional Finite-Volume RANS method?

Any comments are welcomed.

Thanks again.

Sorry, I must admit I read too fastly you previous message, I thought you're talking about panel methods (like vortex lattice for example). Vortex methods are more complex...and I'm completely ignorant about these methods. Luca

It is okay, Thanks Luca.

Any comments about the current status of vortex method are welcomed.

There are also good papers of T.Sarpkaya

Sarpkaya, T., (1989), "Computational Methods with Vortices - The 1988 Freeman Scholar Lecture," Journal of Fluids Engineering, ASME lll, No. 1, 5-52

Sarpkaya, T., (1994), "Vortex Element Methods for Flow Simulation," In Advances in Applied Mechanics, (Ed. Th. Wu and A Hutchinson), Vol. 31, 113-247

Dear Anton:

DO you have the copy of those papers? I have difficulties in getting those. Appreciate if you could send them to my Email: ngkhaiching2000@yahoo.com if any?

Many thanks, Anton

Google "vortex method". There are two books I know of - by (1) A. Chorin, and (2) G-H Cottet and P. Koumoutsakos. But you can go to the following for intro to various vortex methods:

Hi, i'm not involved in vortex methods but i think that a useful book could be:

Lewis : "Vortex Element Methods For Fluid Dynamic Analysis of Engineering Systems" - Cambridge

At least the second part treats exactly what you mean.
