Simplification Of Model

Hi All,

I'm trying to do a CFD analysis of multiple diesel generators located next to each other. I am trying to determine the minimum distance between each generator to prevent re-intake of exhaust.

I have managed to obtain a 3D model from the supplier in a .STEP format. This model is extremely complicated with multiple points (by my count over 100 components at the bare minimum).

Once I import the model into Autodesk Simulation CFD, the software begins to lag out. This job that i'm looking at will have at least 2 generators which adds more complexity to the model.

I was wondering how would i approach simplifying the 3d model allowing myself to actually solve the problem?

Cheers,
Orrin

There's no general rule for that as it depends on your specific simulation.
In any case:
1. remove what is not wet
2. simplify or remove what you think will not play an important role in your solution

Hi Orrin,

Could you please let me know what boundary condition data you have ?
If you know flow rate at inlet and exhaust of generator, we can think of simplifying this model a lot.

In my opinion, if the flow from one generator outlet would enter to other generator inlet would depend on

1) The velocity of exhaust fluid
2) Wind velocity and direction (if it is placed in open atmosphere)
3) Geometry configurations in the vicinity of inlet and exhaust

I think the most simple model would be to model generators as simple block with minimum geometry features. Do not mesh the inside of generator. Create domain around the generator and do the simulation for only external domain (refer to the image) You can see if recalculation is happening or not through pathline plots.

Thanks
Vijay
