Hello folks,

I am currently writing my master thesis about FSI. I faced a lot of articles about ALE-formulation, which I want to describe.

Actually my problem is, that I don't understand where I can find the ALE-mesh regarding my fluid and solid structure. Are both meshes formulated in ALE description? If so, why do I descretize a solid and a fluid mesh independently in practice? Does that mean that the mesh will be regenerated to an ALE-mesh once deformations appear?

Do we need any interpolation at the interface then?

Thanks in advance for every helpful remark.

Thomas

The ALE formulation only applies to the fluid domain. The solid domain is Lagrangian. If the nodal locations at the fluid/solid interface do not coincide, some means of interpolation will be necessary to transfer pressure and surface tractions from fluid to solid and transfer mesh nodal displacements from solid to fluid.

Thank you tas38. How do I know if nodal locations coincide? On what does it depend? Is it controllable by the user?
