I read a paper where an delta(u) is defined as u_j+1 - u_j and upside down delta(u) as u_j - u_j-1. What about the case of a delta with a two superscript? (like laplace operator?)

It may be a second-order differential term seen as (u_i+1-2u_i+u_i-1)/del^2
