Re: how to select CFD Software
Star-CD is a better choice for combustion modelling.

You state "combustion engines" by this I assume you mean internal combustion engines, moving piston, valves, fuel spray etc. On this application Star will trounce Fluent. On this application, Fluent is all marketing spin and no history. For ICE application you need moving mesh and Fluent is remeshing tets for a couple of years at most and for some of this time not very well either. Star has run moving mesh with bricks for about 13 years now without trouble. Want less cells, quicker run times and a wider range of benchmarked models, then use Star.

I have recently heard that Fluent has trouble with particle tracking not working in parallel. Therefore for industrial furnace applications Star will run in parallel, but Fluent not. In other words Fluent will take a month to run. Not very Fluent.

No - I do not work for adapco either.

How about KIVA?

Re: how to select CFD Software
hai Peter, Your answer was really helpful, but we have to decide between star ccm+ and fluent, so moving mesh is not availeble in star ccm+ . anyways we r now intersted in furnace simulation, only after 6 months we will go for IC engines 3D cfd simulation (now we use only 1D cfd using Gt power). so we have decided for star ccm+ , but we have to prove our boss why we choose star ccm+.

You can use same license for STAR-CCM+ and STAR-CD. and in STAR-CD you can use moving mesh but it is very difficult initially..

but in near future we hope that there will be moving mesh in STAR-CCM+ also... but when, i dont know.. may be Peter knows about it..

hai Nari, I think when we buy star ccm+ u cant use Star cd. but when u buy star cd u can use star ccm+. so if we decide for star ccm+ we have to wait till they introduce moving mesh in it. am i right?

Re: how to select CFD Software

Friends inside CD-adapco have informed me that moving mesh will be in STAR-CCM+ v3, expect this in Q1 2008.

I need this for non-combustion work, and I know who is implementing this in the code during August and September 2007.
