Do you know any package for scientific painting used usually in papers or books?

or how authors supply schematic figures figures?

If you really mean "paintning" and not visualisation software, you may simply use "Paint" - but it depends on complexity of your figure. If you need a visualization program, you can choose between IDL, Matlab, ParaView, etc. or any CAD programm.

But actually (to be honest) I have got help with a similar problem from a friend of mine, who was a skilled artist She made a very nice and detailed picture which I scanned and used for my thesis.

Picture file format depends on journal requirements, I would suggest PNG...

Me too, it's off topic, but I'm looking already for a long time for a vector orientated freeware figure drawer (with some snap to grid function or so)

You can take a look at GIMP or Inkscape.

Thanks!

Gimp is a bit too complete for me, I'll have a look at inkscape

Just for your feedback.

I installed it by now.

It's a very good program indeed, just what I was looking for!

Thanks!
