Do you know any package for scientific painting used usually in papers or books?
or how authors supply schematic figures figures? |

If you really mean "paintning" and not visualisation software, you may simply use "Paint" - but it depends on complexity of your figure. If you need a visualization program, you can choose between IDL, Matlab, ParaView,etc. or any CAD programm.
But actually (to be honest) I have got help with a similar problem from a friend of mine, who was a skilled artist She made a very nice and detailed picture which I scanned and used for my thesis. Picture file format depends on journal requirements, I would suggest PNG... |

Me too, it's off topic, but I'm looking already for a long time for a vector orientated freeware figure drawer (with some snap to grid function or so)
