Have you studied continuum mechanics, or tensor calculus, at college?

Simply put, a scalar has a magnitude but no direction. A vector has both a magnitude and a direction. For example, speed is a scalar (I'm going 60 mph in my car), but velocity is a vector (I'm going 60 mph northeast).
