Types of CFD solvers
I feel pretty sure a thread like this exists, but I could not locate it after searching for a while. Feel free to reply or direct me to a post which can answer my question.
I wish to know how are the different types of CFD solvers classified. I know there are a few different techniques which each solver inherently uses. For example, the most common distinction being- 1) FEM solver 2) FVM solver Another one being, pressure and density based solvers. Similar to this, what are the other criteria which may separate one solver from the other? Also, are some of these criteria interlinked too? For example, a FEM solver will always be pressure based (just an example)? Finally, if someone might know, under what classification does Acusolve fall? Thanks in advance! |
I can't comment on all of this, but I know for sure that Acusolve is an FEM based solver. I believe Acusolve is the only major commerical code availiable that is FEM based. Most well known solvers are FVM based: ANSYS Fluent, ANSYS CFX, Star-CCM+, Star-CD, OpenFOAM.
I'd recommend you look into what constitutes a Finite Element Method means of solving a PDE and doing the same for Finite Volume Method. I do not think either are constrained to being a pressure or density based solver. Though I can not say that with confidence! Hope this helps! |
