methods for Poisson equation

Who can tell me the available method to solve Poisson equation? I used SOR for its simplicity, but reviewer said it is not stat of the art. I also heard SOR is stable than FFT(Fast Fourier Transform).

Any one has the experience?

thx

Re: methods for Poisson equation

Hello qunwuhe,

There is two groups of method to resolv Poisson equation :

1° iterative method, like SOR

2° direct, which can use FFT to resolv more efficently and quicly Poisson equation

These two way have some advantages and inconvenients.

To be more precise, direct method is more accurate than than iterative method by more expansive in term of memory (RAM). Second point, when u use FFT you can't use lot of Boundary method. Finally, I think that direct method is recommanded when you -can- use it, but if you want to have a very generalized solver, iterative is the right way.
