Wall functions and their computation

Hi,

Recently I am reading about wall functions and the recommendations about placing the first node at certain y+ values. My question is:

Is wall function (like standard wf in k-e) only used to compute the value in the first node closest from the wall or is it used to compute the values at more nodes?

I ask this because I have read that you shouldn't place it in the laminar layer and as far as I know standard wf in k-e computes the values according to U=y+ which is correct, the incorrect region is buffer zone, so that's why I wonder why we shouldn's place the first node there. Of course if wf is only used to compute the value in the first node then we shouldn't because k-e gives erroneous results in the boundary layer.
