Folks, I would like to simulate boiling heat transfer in a long pipe. I realize that perhaps certain assumptions must be made regarding whether the fluid boils at the wall or in the bulk flow, and about the nature of the resultant two phase flow. However, the fluid will end up at a superheated state and the differences in those assumptions could be evaluated parametrically.

Is anyone aware of such a simulation being published? Any with commercially available codes? We use Fluent here, but I could get my hands on CFD++ or possibley even STAR CCM in a pinch.

Thanks - Andy R

The CD-adapco folks implemented a nucleate boiling model in release v2.08. Below is a link to the press release.

Paul, I actually need to completely boil the fluid. This is similar to the Fluent UDF which seems to be limited (though I could be wrong) to some small fraction of fluid boiled to gas.

Thanks - Andy

A few years ago, we did a trial using Fluent to simulate water boiling in pipe, essentially horizontal, 5-cm diameter about 5 meter long with heat flux along the top surface. We based our set-up on a Fluent tutorial for pool boiling.

We were interested in calculating the upper pipe wall temperature as a function of the angle from horizontal. Our situation, as in the tutorial, did not result in complete boiling of all of the liquid, but without checking back, I don't see why it couldn't.

It wasn't completely satisfactory, but that was a few versions of Fluent ago, and we were light on the number of cells used.
