CFD software for hypersonic flows
 

Hi

I'm looking to run RANS-based CFD for hypersonic flows.

I'd like a software to use that allows me to implement my own turbulence models.

My current options are Fluent, GASP, and CFD++

My question is does it matter which one I use or should all of these be appropriate? Are there any roadbumps in using Fluent for this?

Steve, I use both GASP and FLUENT. When I can I prefer GASP from a physics capture standpoint. It has a much longer history within the high speed flow community. It clearly does a better job capturing weaker shocks and expansion waves. It seems to have a better set of wall treatments for compressible flow and BL shock interaction.

That said it requires a strict multi block grid (though it allows poles) and it does not yet fully support droplet injection (at least to fluents level) and it has no "mixed is burned" type of combustion model. I do use FLUENT when necessary.

Be aware that certain components of GASP are export controlled.

I do know of people using CFD++ succesfully but have no personal experience. I have also heard that STAR-CCM is capable of modeling these flows.

A caveat If your flow is such that gas dissasociation effects will be important say something above the mach 7 to 9 range, than you really need something like GASP, its thermodynamic models are significantly more sophisticated. There is also a "free" code out there called VULCAN from NASA.

CFD++ only works on windows and not large clusters, is this right? are there performance test on large linux cluster?
